Herbal Supplement May Stop Diabetes

Early research form China suggests that taking Chinese herbal medicines may reduce the risk of developing diabetes for people with elevated blood sugar levels.

The researchers gave Tianqi, supplement containing Chinese herbs, resulting in reduction of full blown diabetes risk by more than 30 percent.  The overall reduction in diabetes risk was about the same as that provided by diabetes medications like acarbose and metformin.  The Tianqi formula includes several herbs that have been shown to lower blood sugar levels and improve control of blood sugar levels after meals.

Nearly 400 people in China with pre-diabetes were randomly assigned in the study to take either an herbal medicine called Tianqi (a mixture of 10 Chinese herbal medicines)  or a placebo three times daily for one year. People with pre-diabetes have elevated blood sugar levels that are not yet high enough to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

According to study author, Chun-Su Yuan, MD, from the Tang Center for Herbal Medicine Research at the University of Chicago, Illinois, this is the first study to show that a Chinese herbal medicine can reduce the progression of pre-diabetes to diabetes.  The study could provide a new option for diabetes management, using herbal medicine alone or as an adjuvant to currently used therapies.  The results were published online January 16 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

A combination of 10 Chinese medicinal herbs in a capsule, known as Tianqi, reduced progression to type- 2 diabetes in people with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in a randomized controlled trial in China.

The findings show that the Chinese herbal medicine was comparable to some pharmaceuticals in reducing progression to type 2 diabetes, say the researchers. For example, the results seen with Tianqi were similar to those found with acarbose, at 25%, and metformin, at 31%.

Around 79 million individuals in the United States aged over 20 years have pre-diabetes, a state in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but do not meet the diagnostic criteria for type 2 diabetes.

People with pre-diabetes are at greater risk for developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke, but they often struggle to make the necessary lifestyle changes to control blood sugar levels, and current medications have limitations and can have adverse gastrointestinal side effects. Traditional Chinese herbs may offer a new option for managing blood sugar levels, either alone or in combination with other treatments.

However, according to the researchers, it's too soon to recommend this herbal medicine as a therapy to prevent diabetes, because larger studies with longer follow-up time are needed to verify the results.
