Dieting Mistakes To Avoid

 dietmyth01

Based on the Journal of the American Medical Association, conventional wisdom used to be that cutting back on fat would make us lean and healthy. However, things have not quite worked out that way, and Americans are struggling to adjust to a new dietary reality.

Fifty years ago, we consumed a high-fat diet, with whole milk, rich sauces and spreads, full-fat salad dressings, regular peanut butter and fatty meats. But this eating pattern took a drastic turn as research had suggested that the fat in our food would make us gain weight and clog our arteries.

Thus fats were replaced with carbohydrate with assertion that carbohydrate would naturally help us eat less and control weight without consciously trying to cut back calories. And this included sugar.

Why not? Sugar is tasty, but like all carbohydrates, it has a much lower energy density. So sugar emerged as a good way to displace fat and calories from the diet — the so-called sugar-fat seesaw.

Americans were urged to substitute all fats with a variety of carbohydrates, including six to 11 servings of grain products daily, as exemplified by the original Food Guide Pyramid.
As there is never any consensus on how body manipulates food, people make mistakes as they venture into “dieting”. The biggest mistake dieters pursue is all or nothing attitude.

That itself lays the path to failure. The self-imposed strict guidelines of their diet are impossible to maintain. One thing that you often forget is the importance of moderation. Fill up on servings of fruits and vegetables but allow yourself to enjoy the occasional indulgence for the sake of sanity.

Then there are those select a diet plan where you eat the same thing every day. Though normally routines are preferred in your life style, you tend to have variety in food intake. It is advisable that you select a diet or new nutrition plan that allows you to enjoy a wide variety of foods.

Setting unrealistic goals for dieting is also a big mistake. Setting realistic goals along with support from your friends and family is likely to yield desirable results. The weight Watchers program has enjoyed astonishing success by resorting to dieting with support system.

The final mistake is that you are likely to give up dieting totally. Just like in life, failure is a part of any dieting plan you undertake. You may have to make few adjustments to your dieting plan to achieve your desired realistic goals.

The important thing when it comes to dieting is the goal. Your goals have to be centered on being healthy and maintaining healthy lifestyle. For some, it may be that they have to shed pounds. For some, the goal may be lower blood sugar level. For some the goal may be to lower blood pressure.

In summary, dieting need not be punishment but a renewed path to healthy lifestyle. Thus you are not required to starve yourself or punish yourself in the process. There is nothing wrong or sinful about enjoying food. The problem lies when you enjoy only the wrong sorts of foods. Ultimately you learn to enjoy food in moderation paving path to the success you seek.
